![]() Luckily, we have a instrument folder called “Elements” that contain basic sounds that you can build upon - using the ability to expand an instrument and load samples from within it, we can load the sample “ Sine 16.351 Hz” from the instrument called Chip - Sine.xrni You can’t cook without ingredients, and in this case our main ingredient would be a sine-wave. Now, if we want to be able to load the instrument into any song, it would be a good practice to settle on the standard tuning, in which the A-4 note represents 440Hz. However, the sine-wave sample itself is playing at an extremely low frequency - 16.351 Hz is well below the limit of human hearing - so we would first need to transpose the sample upwards. In this picture, we are using both the numeric input, and clicking along the edge of the keyzone to adjust the basenote In our case, we want to adjust the basenote via the keyzone editor - all the way down to the lowest possible pitch: In Renoise, you can transpose samples in two ways - either by tweaking the transpose amount directly in the sample properties panel, or by opening the keyzone editor and adjusting the basenote. Being a sine-wave, the sample should produce a clear peak, as you can see here To ensure that our sinewave is in fact tuned to the right frequency, try playing an A-4 note while looking at the spectrum analyzer (hint: to view the spectrum analyzer, switch to the mixer or pattern editor, and click this icon in the upper toolbar: ). If triggering the note at A-4 plays the sample at the 440 Hz frequency, we are ready to continue. Note: if you had loaded another type of sample - containing more complex harmonics - it would probably be a good idea to listen closely to the sound, and then adjust the transpose/finetune by ear. ![]() Still, a sine-wave would be a useful reference - a good “tuning fork”, so to speak. Opening the modulation editor, you can quickly add 8 sets by pressing the + button, and assigning the corresponding names: 16, 5 ⅓, 8, 4, 2 ⅔, 2, 1 ⅗ and 1 ⅓. Of course, these names are just there for reference, you could leave the names to their default values too. ![]() Having selected the Volume slot, we then add an Operand device. and use copy-paste to copy the contents of the Volume slot to the remaining sets. For copying the modulation set, we can either use the keyboard shortcuts CTRL+C/CTRL+V, or access the clipboard via the context menu (right-click)Īlso, we want to add macro assignments for each volume operand. Quickly done, although at this stage the repetition might begin to feel a bit tedious? Don't worry, we are nearly done! Step 4: Creating and tuning samples This is done by stepping through the various sets in macro-assignment mode. With our basic sample and modulation layers in place, all that is missing now are the actual samples. We will need to create copies of the original sine-wave sample, and transpose each copy according to the table of frequencies from step 1.

The opposite in fact, and she hated it, really hated it. It didn’t matter how many times she and Alan had done this dance it wasn’t getting any easier. She sighed, and the sigh turned into a groan. Kira closed her eyes, let her head fall back. A few days more, and she and everyone else in the ten-person survey team would get into cryo, and when they woke up at 61 Cygni, twenty-six days later, they would each go their separate ways, and that would be the last she would see of Alan for … for how long, she didn’t know. They would be leaving in the morning, taking off to rejoin their transport, the Fidanza, which was already in orbit around Adra. But today, dread and sadness outran reason. Most days the machine’s resistance wouldn’t bother her. Keeping her injured hand knotted in a fist, she paced the lab, breathing heavily while she waited for the pain to subside. Her lips curled in a snarl, and she hit the gene sequencer, hard. She let go and, upon examining her hand, saw a thin line of blood oozing through the skin. Her fingers slipped, and she sucked in her breath as one of the metal edges sliced her palm. Besides, the colonists who would soon be arriving on the Shakti-Uma-Sati would have newer, better models, not the budget, travel-sized one the company had stuck her with. ![]() The gene sequencer was part of a xenobiologist’s basic kit, and where she went, it went. Most of their equipment would stay on Adrasteia, the Earth-sized moon they had spent the past four months surveying. “Dammit,” she muttered, and readjusted her stance. The machine wasn’t that large, but it was heavy, and she couldn’t get a good grip on it. Inside the compound’s cramped lab, Kira struggled to extract the gene sequencer from its alcove in the wall. Domes and tunnels and windowed enclosures, a lone place of warmth and life amid the alien environment. Around it glittered a field of stars, bright against the black of space, while beneath the giant’s lidless glare stretched a grey wasteland streaked with stone.Ī small huddle of buildings stood in the otherwise desolate expanse. The orange gas giant, Zeus, hung low above the horizon, huge and heavy and glowing with a ruddy half-light. Got any questions or requests? ![]() Trust me, if you shoot for HDR, the Pro version is worth it.Īs I mentioned at the start, HDR has a bad rap with many photographers because of the over processed, wow I took this photo on acid look that so many people go for. Luckily, if you decide to start with the standard version, you can upgrade to the Pro version for the difference in price between the two products. Unless you're just a casual user, and only shoot JPG, I'd highly suggest the Pro version of Aurora HDR. So, what does an extra $50 get you? Quite a bit actually: It's a stand alone application, or with the Pro version it can also be used as a plug-in from Lightroom, Photoshop, or Aperture. What happens when you bring two very talented entities together? You end up with Aurora HDR. For Windows users, right now you're out of luck, although MacPhun is saying a Windows version is in the works and has a signup form on their website for interested people.Īvailable in both a standard version at $49 and a Pro version for $99 (there is also a Pro version with a hour long training video from Trey for $129 - personally, Aurora HDR is intuitive enough that you don't need the video, but Trey is an excellent teacher and always a pleasure to listen to or watch). Many photographers, regardless of camera or computer brand are familiar with Trey Ratcliff of and the Arcanum, one of the most recognized experts on HDR imagery. Mac users are likely familiar with MacPhun, a company that produces a wide range of stand alone and plug-in software for image editing. Sure, there are images where this looks great and really adds to the feeling of the shot, but there are plenty of times that combining multiple images in a realistic way is going to dramatically improve the finished product without looking other worldly. For the most part, it's due to the over saturated and sharpened look that so many of these images have. HDR is a polarizing subject for many photographers. |
